Chris Webber not sure of his NBA future

Tuesday 26 June 2007 @ 10:51 pm

CWebb, looks to be taking the summer off from thinking of what he going to do for basketball next season. He’s going to take his time before deciding on what team to sign with for 08. I’m sure the Piston would want him back, if they can afford him, or in the past I’ve heard the Lakers were a team that were interested in Webber.

Webber, who can become a free agent Sunday, is involved with a pair of off-the-court projects to keep his mind occupied while he delays a decision about his career.

He hosted a news conference Tuesday at the Charles W. Wright Museum of African American History, where his collection of artifacts and documents will be on display from Thursday through Sept. 28. sportingnews

Now what after Tiger and Vijay are noshows?

Tuesday 26 June 2007 @ 7:05 pm

If you’re still a golf fan, it won’t matter too much that Tiger Woods and Vijay Sing will not be making a trip to Grand Blanc. So if you’re still going to go to see a couple of rounds of golf, who are you going to see? Although the entry list is a little thin with BIG names, there are a few golfers that are still worth checking out: John Daly and Jim Furyk. Hope you have “free” tickets.

Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club, Grand Blanc, Mich. June 28 - July 1, 2007 Contact: (800) 878-OPEN

What do we all want to see when we tune in to Sunday’s golf broadcast?

Great golf, of course.

Stirring competition, naturally.

Awe-inspiring shots that we could never pull off in a thousand tries, sadly.

That forms the basis of a heart-racing afternoon. But this experience doesn’t really induce the highest frissons of delight unless the world’s best players are involved in the drama. In this respect, the Buick Open, played at Warwick Hills outside of the Motor City, has served golf fans like no other tournament over the last several years, making those Sundays gazing at the boob tube a life enriching entertainment cbsnews.

Lions will have a busy back field; KJ hopes to return

Monday 25 June 2007 @ 6:27 pm

The lions offseason(s) is alway interesting, compared to the season. (fire) Millen seems to always pick up a few new pieces to add to the team. This year it was the RB position, lions signed former Spartan T.J. Duckett, Traded for Tatum Bell and re-signed Aveion Cason. Where are they going to put everyone? Do they not think Kevin Jones is healthy enough to make a legitimate come back? That remains to be seen. I hope for Kevin’s sake (and ours) he is on his way back.

Kevin Jones, RB, Lions: Ah, the dreaded Lisfranc fracture. Jones was on pace to finish the season with 919 rushing yards, 693 receiving yards and 11 TDs when he went down in Week 14 against the Vikings. There have been conflicting reports out of Detroit ever since the injury — some say Jones will never fully recover, and others saying he’ll be 100 percent by training camp. Jones has begun running and cutting on his injured foot. He’s a gamer who’ll play through injuries and he fits in well with Mike Martz’s offense, having caught 61 balls in just 12 games last year. On the other hand, it’s a tell tale sign that Detroit brought in Tatum Bell and T.J. Duckett in the offseason for insurance, and there have been rumors that KJ will start the season on the PUP list. The prognosis is simple: if you’re a dynasty owner of KJ, don’t sell him low — he will be back to full health, just not in 2007. He’s still young enough to bounce back and pick up where he left off in 2008. Seasonal owners can take a chance on him toward the end of their drafts and hope that his rehab accelerates in the coming months. SI

Kitna thinks Lions will have 10+ win season

Monday 25 June 2007 @ 2:27 pm

Well-Well, it’s the the Lions version of the Pistons Guaran-sheed it’s Krazy-Kinta. Jon Kitna re-ups his look in to the future on how many wins the Lions will have in 2007.

I’m still thinking it will be at least another 2 years before they get to the level of 10+ wins and possibly making the playoffs. Good thing we have the Tigers, Wings and Pistons in this town.

“See, that was 10 games before I saw the schedule, too,” the quarterback told WDFN-AM (1130) this week. “I’ll keep to myself what I think we actually will win. But it’s more than 10 games.”

The Lions went 3-13 last season and are 24-72 in the Matt Millen era.

“I think, last year, man, it really sucked,” Kitna said. “But the good thing about it, like coach (Rod) Marinelli said, he found out who wanted to be here, who didn’t, and he’s been able to put his stamp on this team.” freep

Mike Maroth says Good Bye to his Detroit Fans

Monday 25 June 2007 @ 2:09 pm

Former Detroit Tiger said a few kind words to his fans in Detroit. Mike was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals for a player to be named later. The player in return will likely be another lefty that has options to be in the minors.

MarothBaseball.com: This team gave me my chance in the big leagues and you helped carry me through some very difficult times. So many people doubted me and our team during the hard times a few years back but the Tiger fans never lost hope. You stood by us and cheered for us to go back out on the field and just keep fighting. That’s what Tiger fans do, they don’t quit. I was strengthened and inspired by your words of encouragement in the letters you sent me over the years and I will never forget your loyalty to Detroit. You embraced me and my family as your own and we came to know this great city as a place we called home.

I will cherish my memories here and look forward to making a visit back to Detroit whenever that may be. Thank you so much for the support, the encouragement, and cheers that my family and I have received over the years. There is no way to express to you how deep our love for this city and Tiger fans everywhere is. We will always have a special place in our hearts for the city and fans of Detroit. We have always looked forward to spending our summers in D-town. Thank you for letting it become our home too. God Bless You.

Pistons have to sign Billups, or do they?

Monday 25 June 2007 @ 12:50 pm

I’m torn on what the pistons should do this offseason. Should the Pistons trade for the likes of KG or Kobe or stay on the same track the team is currently traveling on? The draft hasn’t done anything for JoeD seems like every draft pick has left or is a bust “FreeDarko”. So the draft is not an option. What if they do sign Billups to a long term contract for a fat pocket of dough? What would that truly solve? We’ll see I guess..

Chauncey Billups officially opted out of his contract Monday, making him an unrestricted free agent as of July 1. “Chauncey’s first intention is to come back to Detroit, and we’ll continute to explore that as an option, but if we’re unable to make a deal with the Pistons my obligation is to look at other possibilities that will provide long-term security for Chauncey and his family,” agent Andy Miller told ESPN.com.

Verlander notches a win over struggling Braves

Sunday 24 June 2007 @ 9:29 am

Verlander keeps it rolling this season with a easy win at Atlanta on Saturday. Justin has allowed only 4 runs in the 29 innings pitched for the month of June, current ERA 2.78 with 85 strike outs this season.

ATLANTA - Justin Verlander pitched seven innings to win his fourth straight start and the Detroit Tigers beat light-hitting Atlanta, 2-1, yesterday, leading frustrated Braves manager Bobby Cox to pick up a record-tying ejection.

Carlos Guillen homered for the Tigers, who have won six straight games. philly

Ordonez having MVP season

Saturday 23 June 2007 @ 12:46 pm

It’s pretty nice seeing Magglio having this type of season. I remember when Detroit picked him up from the Chicago White Sox, not one person in town thought it was a good pickup. Detroit, at the time had had a history of over paying players and them not producing. Way to go Magglio you’re showing your worth/this year and last and glad you are healthy - it shows.

Magglio Ordonez’s stats have the look of an MVP: .383 | 13 HR | 68 RBI

Editor’s Note: This story appears in the July 2 edition of ESPN The Magazine.

On consecutive days recently, Jim Leyland peered into the Detroit Tigers clubhouse, turned to his right, in the direction of Magglio Ordonez’s locker, and boisterously yelled, “Magglio!!” as if he had seen his right fielder for the first time in years. On the second day this occurred, Carlos Guillen, who sits next to Ordonez, playfully wondered why he did not get the same greeting. Perhaps if Guillen had posted similar numbers as Ordonez (.383-13-67), one of the leading MVP candidates in the American League, Leyland would be compelled to yell for Guillen, too. ESPN

Wings draft defenseman

Saturday 23 June 2007 @ 11:13 am

Sounds like the wings picked up a Hockey player that idolized Brendan Shanahan, but with defenseman skills. Wings need some help on the d-line. Hopefully this draft pick can add to the teams near future.

And, yes, Smith was shocked and pleased to be chosen by the Wings, too.

“When my name was announced I was like “Was that my name?’ ” Smith said. “That was interesting. I’m thrilled. I can’t even describe it.”

On the surface, Smith fits the profile of the typical Wings draftee that’s a defenseman.

He can move the puck, is a great skater, quarterbacks the power play, and even though he lacks some size now at 6-foot-1, 170 pounds, he’s not afraid to throw his body around. Brendan Smith grew up in Toronto and was raised near Mimco, where former Red Wing Brendan Shanahan was born and raised. Smith wears No. 14, after Shanahan. detnews

Ex-Lion Hall: Lions still suck

Saturday 23 June 2007 @ 12:31 am

James Hall who was traded this offseason doesn’t have much to say about his former team. Nothing we haven’t heard before i.e. Dre Bly or Joey Harrington.

“I personally didn’t feel that the organization was going in the right direction, as far as the people they were bringing in to make it a winning team,” he said. “I just got tired of, every two years, rotating the coaching staff, guys going in and out, not really having any continuity on the team. I just felt like I wasn’t going to have the opportunity to get something done there. “It got to the point where it was so frustrating, disappointing, that (the playoffs were) hard to watch.”

Finally, asked to compare the Rams and Lions, Hall said, “I can see a huge difference in the team speed. It’s like night and day here.”freep
