Tigers: Miguel Cabrera will be wearing uniform number 24, just as he did in Florida. Edgar Renteria will be #8, and Jacque Jones will be #19 (wonder if he knows that was the cursed Juan Gonzalez number?).

– Willis will wear No. 21, and he said the reason is that was Deion Sanders’ number. “I knew I couldn’t get 35,” Willis said, referring to the number he wore in Florida. “That’s the no-hitter man, Verlander. I respect that. When they started reading off numbers, they mentioned 21, and I said, `That’s it.’ ”

It’s going to be a sorry day when Brandon Inge has to be traded. He’s been here through the losing seasons and deserves a shot to stay - if the Tigers are willing to pay his 19.1 mill he signed for last season.. until then..
The Tigers are already working on trading Brandon Inge, and it’s pretty certain that he will be dealt, if not before the winter meetings end, then at least before spring training. The Tigers have also told teams they’d like to deal Marcus Thames and Chad Durbin. Inge makes $19.1 million over the next three years, but the Tigers don’t believe they’ll have to pay any of the salary to get a deal done. Many teams are looking for third basemen, and the Los Angeles Dodgers could be one that has interest. Some people have also mentioned Philadelphia as a possible destination. What would the Tigers like to get in return? Well, they wouldn’t mind some more middle relief, but the biggest need is to replenish the talent in the farm system. For those who wonder whether the Tigers would consider keeping Inge as their third baseman and playing Cabrera in left field, yes, it has been discussed, but for various reasons it’s unlikely, and it’s almost certain that Inge will be dealt.

So this will be one tough, relentless lineup, packed with smart, experienced hitters who don’t do much swinging and missing. The Tigers nearly scored 900 runs this season, with Sheffield hurting, with Rodriguez walking only nine times all year and with very little production out of left field.
Now they’ve added Cabrera and a shortstop who almost won the NL batting title (Renteria). So this might very well be the best lineup in baseball next season, bar none.

Manager Jim Leyland can go with a lineup that looks like this:
1. Curtis Granderson, cf
2. Placido Polanco, 2b
3. Magglio Ordonez, rf
4. Miguel Cabrera, 3b
5. Gary Sheffield, DH
6. Carlos Guillen, 1b
7. Edgar Renteria, ss
8. Jacque Jones, lf
9. Ivan Rodriguez, c.
Or Leyland can just pull the names out of a hat. Does it really matter?

Only a handful of GMs would consider trading a player of Maybin’s caliber, though Dombrowski is hardly your paint-by-numbers executive. In four years, he has turned the Tigers from a 119-loss laugh track to a perennial World Series contender, and this move only strengthens their cause.

Ken Rosenthal makes some good points.. Damn it’s good to be a good season in Detroit in 08. Is football season over yet?
As good as he is, imagine how good he can be.
If anything, the bigger question for Cabrera might come if he signs a long-term contract with the Tigers and outlasts Leyland and Co. But by then, he might be a winner of multiple World Series, a mature professional with a strong work ethic, the new Manny Ramirez.
Check out this proposed Tigers lineup:

What’s next after the trade? The Tigers still have some work to do for Bullpen help, extra infielder and outfielder. Could Inge move back to catcher? We’ll see..
As a result of the deal, Detroit is now willing to move third baseman Brandon Inge, outfielder Marcus Thames and right-handed pitcher Chad Durbin, in order to free up money in the Tigers’ payroll.
Inge, who will be displaced at third base by Cabrera, is owed $19.1 million over the next three seasons, and Detroit may need to absorb some of that salary in order to trade him. Durbin and Thames were due to receive raises in arbitration.

In addition to Miller and Maybin, rated the No. 3-ranked prospect by MLB.com, the Marlins will receive catcher Mike Rabelo, and right-handed pitchers Burke Badenhop, Eulogio de la Cruz and Dallas Trahern.
Rabelo, 28, spent the 2007 with the Tigers, hitting .256 with one home run and 18 RBIs in 51 games. De la Cruz, 23, pitched 6 2/3 innings for the Tigers last season with no decisions and a 6.75 ERA. He was 4-5 with a 3.41 ERA at Double-A Erie.
Trahern, 22, was 12-6 with a 3.87 ERA at Erie, while Bradenhop, 24, was 10-6 with a 3.13 ERA at Single-A before going 2-0 with a 1.45 ERA at Erie.
